On October, 23rd, 1,300 cyclists rode across Granada's region on a 131km route. Participants had the chance to discover Andalusia unique landscapes under a beautiful weather, with a blue sky an no wind.

L’Étape Granada by Tour de France presented by Lapierre consisted in a 131 km and 2,000m D+ route with three climbs, three aid stations and a Wall that was the Achilles heel of the thousands of participants who joined us. A route that captivates everyone with its changes of landscape chained between hills and mountains with different shades of green and clear skies, typical of this area in Andalusia. The participants moved from south enjoying the views of the Sierra Nevada and the Sierra de la Alpujarra. The main difficulties of L'Étape Granada 2022 were the colossal part of Los Guájares and the Wall of Saleres.

Los Guájares is a colossus of 14km of ascent with a 730m climb and a maximum height of 822 meters. Added to the accumulated fatigue at the beginning of this pass are the 7.29 km with 460 m of positive elevation gain and ramps of up to 12% of the last part. After having reached the top in Venta de la Cebada, riders faced a serpentine and aerial descent with curves, bridges and narrowings, but with a Hors Categorie asphalt.

The Wall of Saleres and the Mirador de la Atalaya

In any World Tour bus talk at the Tour de France, a sports director would give this same information: "8.01 km with 410 m of positive gradient and maximum ramps of 17%, specially in a 2km segment, the Wall of Saleres". Whoch means, in other words, a real fireworks within the peloton!. It demands to be very constant from the beginning in Saleres, because the tough part begins at the end, with a very demanding ramp until Albuñuelas hill! Riders will then have to climb the Mirador de la Atalaya, but, obviously, compared to Saleres, everything seems easy. Even the 10% ramps that this climb includes!

After these two challenging climbs, the last kilometers don't allow cyclists to relax. Indeed, there is still 30 hilly kilometers with many up and down roads!

L’Étape Granada by Tour de France began with a SOLD OUT of registrations and with more than 1,300 cyclists sharing moments in the Village. At the start line, Carlos Sastre, the legend and winner of the 2008 Tour de France, led the pack. It was a privilege for the event that stands out for its technical and scenic diversity on the route, long climbs, endless walls and roads and descents with views of the Sierra Nevada. On the route, the aid stations were animated with musical groups and Didi the Devil, who encouraged all cyclists at the Wall of Saleres and push them to give their best. The end of the event was a great party, like in 2021, with the usual Pasta Party, awards ceremony, the presence of reference brands and a lot of animation.

Finally, we must also highlight the 'Unconditional Nature', a charity initiative created in collaboration with a local organization, focuses on reforesting parts of the route that burned during Los Guájares fire in September. With this initiative, L'Etape Granada commited to give part of its registrations' revenus to buy and plant trees.

Very implicated sponsors

The local institutions commanded by the Granada City Council, GEGSA, the Granada Conference Center and the State Security Forces showed us their unconditional support. Lapierre and his charity initiative to support those affected by the war in Ukraine with the help of the International Red Cross and the L'Étape Spain special edition bicycle, the AIRCODE DRS that will be raffled in Madrid. Movistar promoting women's cycling for another year and Puleva and Scientiffic Nutrition giving riders energy with their Morning Coffee and NO CRAMP respectively. The Strava Challenge that motivated the thousands of cyclists and ATIKA that allowed us to wear a legendary Yellow jersey. All this being taken care of on the day of the event by the Ilbira Motor BMWs.
